Powweb - My Review of This Top Hosting CompanyHome >> Before You Build >> Powweb - My Review of This Top Hosting Company ![]() In April of 2006 I left my old host and went to Powweb. I had been hearing about how much space they offered for quite sometime, but I got too comfortable with my existing host and didn't feel like making the transition. Well, when I found out they were offering 20,000 MB of space for only $7, I couldn't resist. I had to see if this was too good to be true. So I asked around, received good feedback about them and decided to give their plan a try. When I cancelled the hosting plan with my old host they asked me why I was leaving and I told him plainly, "You're charging me $6 per month for 300 MB of web page space while Powweb is just a dollar more and they are offering 20,000 MB." To me it was a no-brainer to go to the host that offers more for my money. Much more! Update 6/2008: Now Powweb offers unlimited space!!! So far I've been quite impressed with the service I've received. The download speeds from my site are fast and I can't recall any downtime on my site except for a platform upgrade that was performed in June. It was a very minimal amount of time and Powweb did a great job of communicating during this process I was very impressed with how they handled this platform transition. As a brand new customer at the time, I have to admit I was very nervous about downtime, etc. because I knew Powweb has a lot of customers. I've heard skeptics say they'll never last because they are growing too quickly, but I'm convinced they'll be around. Not only is their customer service great, but when they converted thousands upon thousands of sites to a new platform this past summer with no real issues I was convinced these folks know what they're doing and I'm here to stay. Another thing I like about their service is that when they upgrade their plans, EXISTING customers get the benefits too. Some hosting companies will grandfather you and when they add new features, only the new customers receive them. With Powweb, everyone gets the benefits. Their built-in website builder could use some improvements. It's great for small, basic websites but if you want a large site with control over the design, I'd recommend using your own HTML editor like CoffeeCup. The user forums are also very helpful and user friendly. If you need a question answered, you can go there to get a response pretty quickly, or you can call their 1-800 support line. I've never had to call them but I've heard good things about this also. They do offer you a free domain name if you pay for one or two years in advance, BUT after that "free period" is up, you have to pickup the yearly domain renewal fee. So it's not free forever. Plus, their renewal domain fees are higher than most. I'd recommend registering your domain name at your favorite registrar and transferring for free over to Powweb. If you need a domain name, you can get one at websitepalace.com along with a free blog. I would definitely recommend Powweb to host your site. At the time I'm writing this, I've only been a customer for about 6 months but I've had nothing but good experiences so far. You won't find many hosting companies that can measure up to their features.
